Western Cape police have launched a massive manhunt following a brutal vigilante attack in Gushindoda, Delft, which left three people dead in the early hours of Tuesday morning. The victims, two men and a woman, were shot and set alight in what authorities believe was an act of vigilante justice.

The incident has sent shockwaves through the community, raising concerns about the rise of mob justice in the area.

According to Colonel Andre Traut, spokesperson for the Western Cape police, the Provincial Serious and Violent Crimes Unit is leading the investigation into the murders. “The victims were shot and set alight in what we believe is an act of vigilantism after shots were heard during the early hours of this morning.

Two of the bodies are male, and the third is believed to be female, as identification has yet to be made,” Traut said. He added that the exact circumstances leading to the murders remain unclear, and no suspects have been arrested yet.

Community Tensions Rise as Police Condemn Vigilantism and Appeal for Public Assistance

The incident has sparked fear and anger among Delft residents, with many expressing frustration over the perceived lack of police intervention in curbing crime in the area. Vigilantism, often seen as a desperate response to high crime rates, has become a growing concern in South Africa, particularly in communities where trust in law enforcement is low. However, Colonel Traut strongly condemned the act, warning that those responsible would face the full might of the law.

“Vigilantism is a crime, and those who commit such acts can expect to be dealt with in a court of law. Harbouring a criminal is also punishable by law,” Traut emphasized. He urged the public to come forward with any information that could assist in the investigation, reminding residents that Crime Stop can be contacted anonymously at 08600 10111.

The police have also called for calm in the community, urging residents to avoid taking the law into their own hands. “We understand the frustrations of the community, but vigilantism only perpetuates violence and lawlessness. We are committed to bringing those responsible for this heinous crime to justice,” Traut added.
