JOHANNESBURG — Joburg transport MMC Kenny Kunene has offered a R100,000 reward to anyone who provides information leading to the arrest of the suspects responsible for the murders of two Rea Vaya bus drivers in Soweto on February 3. The tragic killings have shocked the community, prompting Kunene to take swift action.

Details of the Killings

The suspects killed the Two Rea Vaya drivers in separate incidents. The first shooter targeted a driver at a traffic light in Wild Chestnut Street, Protea. The second driver was shot on Tshithuthune Street, Mapetla, where he lost control of the bus after being shot.

The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) and South African Police Service (SAPS) have both launched investigations to track down the suspects. Despite the police efforts, Kunene stressed the importance of public assistance in apprehending the criminals responsible.

Kunene’s Personal Pledge

Kunene announced that the R100,000 reward would come from his personal funds, not from the City of Johannesburg or the Department of Transport. Subsequently,  he made this pledge to show his deep commitment to justice.

“This is money I am committing as Kenny Kunene to ensure these barbarians are brought to book,”

Kunene emphasized that he would give the reward once the police confirm that the arrested individuals are linked to the murders.

A Call for Public Support

Kunene condemned the killings as a “declaration of war” on both the government and the residents of Johannesburg, particularly those in Soweto. He called on the community to step up and assist the police in bringing the perpetrators to justice.

“We have barbarians who have killed our people and caused trauma throughout Soweto and the Rea Vaya community,” Kunene stated.

Rea Vaya Services Suspended

In the wake of the killings, Rea Vaya bus services remain suspended as the investigation continues. The shocking deaths of the two drivers have left their families, colleagues, and the entire community grieving.

Kunene’s Condolences

Kunene expressed his condolences to the victims’ families, colleagues, and friends.

“I am mortified and distraught by these abominable killings,” he said. “The killing of innocent people has left women as widows and children as orphans.”
