At least 16 people were injured after a bus collided with a heavy-duty truck on Wednesday in De Wagensdrift, near KwaMhlanga, in Tshwane. The crash occurred on Moloto Road (R573), one of the major routes in the region. This incident comes just days after a similar accident on Sunday, which also involved a bus and resulted in 81 people requiring medical attention.
In the latest collision, the two drivers were critically injured and treated at the scene by emergency medical teams. The other 14 victims, who sustained injuries ranging from minor to critical, were quickly attended to by medical personnel. They were transported to KwaMhlanga Hospital, Netcare Montana Hospital, and Mamelodi Regional Hospital for further treatment and observation.
Emergency Response and Road Safety Measures
City of Tshwane Emergency Services, led by spokesperson Lindsay Zwelithini Mnguni, quickly dispatched resources to the scene, including firefighting units from Rayton, Bronkhorstspruit, and Silverton Fire Stations. These units included rapid intervention teams and bush pumpers. Upon arrival, emergency responders worked tirelessly to provide care and secure the scene.
The road was temporarily closed during the rescue operation and recovery of the vehicles involved. Spillages of oil and diesel from the vehicles were promptly addressed to ensure road safety for other motorists. Authorities, including the Tshwane Metro Police Department and Gauteng Province Emergency Medical Services, were also on-site.
Mnguni urged all motorists to exercise caution when driving, particularly on high-traffic roads like Moloto Road. He stressed the importance of adhering to road safety protocols to prevent accidents and minimize injuries.
