Inanda Shootout: Police hunt leave 3 dead, 2 on the run.

Deadly Confrontation in Inanda
INANDA, KWAZULU-NATAL – Police engaged in a fierce shootout with suspected murderers in Bhambayi, Inanda, on Saturday. Officers tracked five suspects wanted for multiple killings, including the deaths of two police officers.

Authorities stormed a house where the suspects had taken refuge. A violent gun battle erupted as the men opened fire. Police retaliated, fatally wounding three suspects and recovering three firearms. However, two suspects managed to escape and remain at large.

Police Confirm Fatal Shootout
KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson Col. Robert Netshiunda confirmed the events. He stated that officers acted on intelligence regarding the suspects’ hideout.

“Upon realising police presence, the suspects opened fire. Officers returned fire, leading to a shootout. Three suspects were shot and fatally wounded, and three firearms were recovered,” Netshiunda said.

The suspects were allegedly involved in the murders of four individuals, including two off-duty police constables. Additionally, they were linked to the attempted murder of four tavern patrons in Sundumbili on January 4.

Manhunt for Escaped Suspects
Police have launched a large-scale manhunt to capture the two fugitives. Authorities urge anyone with information to come forward.

Residents of Inanda fear the suspects might regroup or strike again. The police presence has intensified in the area to prevent further criminal activity.

Similar Incidents in KwaZulu-Natal
Deadly shootouts between police and criminals are becoming more frequent in KwaZulu-Natal. In December 2024, eight suspects were killed in a Richards Bay gun battle after planning to rob a spaza shop.

In January 2025, police arrested 19 suspects and killed one following a mass shooting at Nyanga Taxi Rank. Another recent operation in Verulam led to the death of a 22-year-old gang leader responsible for ten murders.

Public Reactions
South Africans praised KZN Provincial Commissioner Lt-Gen Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi for his strong stance against crime. Many citizens commended the police for swiftly eliminating dangerous criminals.

However, concerns remain over the safety of officers confronting heavily armed suspects. Calls for improved police resources and intelligence gathering have increased following the Inanda shootout.

Authorities continue their efforts to restore order and bring the remaining suspects to justice.
