Conviction in Tragic Ocean View Shooting
A Western Cape High Court judge convicted Eben Basson and Chivargo Fredericks of the murder of 7-year-old Emaan Solomons. The young girl was shot while playing outside her Ocean View home on February 25, 2020. The court found the two guilty of murder, attempted murder, and firearm-related charges.
Tears filled the courtroom on Monday as Judge Gayaat Da Silva Salie handed down the judgment. Basson and Fredericks stormed out of the dock, shouting at detectives and media members. The judge ruled that sentencing proceedings would continue on April 17, even in their absence.
Gang Violence Claims Innocent Life
Authorities identified Basson and Fredericks as members of the Junky Funky Kidz gang. During the trial, prosecutors revealed they attempted to shoot rival gang members when a stray bullet struck Emaan. The case highlighted ongoing gang violence in Ocean View, a community struggling with crime.
Emaan’s grandparents, Ronald Solomons and Pearl Daniels, shared memories of her dreams of becoming a beautician. Their grief mirrored the outrage felt throughout the community, which led to violent protests. Residents burned down five homes linked to suspected drug dealers in response to Emaan’s murder.
On Wednesday night, tensions escalated further as residents set several houses ablaze during a community march in Ocean View. Protesters claimed these homes belonged to gangsters and drug dealers. The unrest underscored the community’s frustration with gang violence and law enforcement’s inability to curb crime.
Courtroom Testimonies and Judgment
During court proceedings, witnesses, including members of the opposing Tailor Gang, recounted the shooting. Judge Da Silva Salie described the day as peaceful until gunfire shattered the tranquility. She considered all presented evidence and found the accused guilty of Emaan’s murder and the attempted murders of four others. The court acquitted them of charges under the Prevention of Organised Crime Act.
Mayor’s Reaction to the Verdict
Cape Town Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis welcomed the conviction, emphasizing the need for justice. “No amount of jail time can bring back Emaan,” he said. “But I hope this verdict sends a strong message to gangsters who have no regard for human life.”
Emaan’s death followed a peaceful march demanding better policing in Ocean View. The tragedy underscored the urgent need for increased security and community action to combat gang violence.
