A 45-year-old woman, Sonell Joubert, appeared in the Tonga Magistrate’s Court on Monday following her arrest for the murder of Jurgen Nel. Authorities took Joubert into custody earlier this month after discovering Nel’s body at Lowhills Farm.
Victim Found with Multiple Stab Wounds
Mpumalanga police spokesperson Lt. Col. Jabu Ndubane confirmed the fatal stabbing happened last Monday. According to police, Joubert allegedly stabbed and killed Nel, 45, at a farm in Kamhlushwa near Komatipoort.
Authorities and paramedics responded to the scene and found Nel with multiple stab wounds. Medical personnel declared him dead at the scene.
Investigation Underway to Determine Motive
Police launched an investigation immediately after opening a murder case. Preliminary findings indicate Joubert allegedly stabbed Nel, though the motive remains unclear.
“Further investigation suggests a scuffle may have occurred before the fatal stabbing,” Ndubane said. “Through ongoing investigations, the truth of what transpired will emerge.”
Suspect to Seek Bail at Next Court Appearance
Authorities arrested Joubert following the investigation. She appeared before the Tonga Magistrate’s Court, where the judge postponed the case to Feb. 18. Joubert is expected to seek bail during her next court appearance.
Protection Order Filed Before the Murder
Local news outlet The Lowvelder reported that Joubert had previously laid a charge against Nel. She accused him of violating a protection order she had obtained against him. According to the report, the accused alleged that Nel had insulted and assaulted her.
As the investigation continues, police urge anyone with additional information to come forward. Authorities remain committed to uncovering the events leading to Nel’s death.
