PRIMROSE, SOUTH AFRICA – A gunman fatally shot a Rapid Rail Germiston police officer in the Marathon Informal Settlement. The officer, Sergeant Manaka of the Rapid Rail Police Unit (RRPU), suffered a fatal headshot while addressing rent disputes in the area.
Incident Details
Sergeant Manaka and his life partner arrived at the informal settlement around 7:55 a.m. to meet tenants behind on rent. Local sources reported that the area has become a hotspot for “Zama Zamas,” or illegal miners, who allegedly rent out shacks.
After resolving rental issues, the couple attempted to leave when an unidentified gunman opened fire. Witnesses heard three gunshots before Sgt. Manaka collapsed, bleeding from the right side of his head. His life partner, visibly shaken, did not see the shooter.
Emergency Response and Investigation
Paramedics arrived promptly and rushed Sgt. Manaka to Netcare Hospital in Alberton. Despite medical efforts, he succumbed to his injuries. Law enforcement has launched an investigation, urging witnesses to provide any relevant information.
The South African Police Service (SAPS) emphasized the importance of public cooperation. “We need the community’s assistance to identify and apprehend the suspect,” said a SAPS spokesperson.
