South African Muslim Councils Call for Justice in Imam’s Murder

KEY POINTS

  • Muslim councils urge justice in Imam Muhsin Hendricks’ murder case.
  • Speculation grows over whether his LGBTQ views played a role.
  • Tributes pour in from faith and LGBTQ communities honoring his legacy.

The United Ulama Council of South Africa (UUCSA) and the Muslim Judicial Council (MJC) have urged the public to allow police to investigate the killing of Imam Muhsin Hendricks, who was shot and killed in Gqeberha, Eastern Cape, on February 15.

According to reports, two unidentified assailants fired multiple shots at the VW Troc in which Hendricks sat.

Police have not confirmed a motive, but speculation has grown about the reason behind the killing. Many believe the killing links to Hendricks’ advocacy for LGBTQ rights within Islam.

“The MJC calls upon the South African Police Service (SAPS) to conduct a thorough and impartial investigation to ensure those responsible are held accountable through due legal processes,” the council stated.

Additionally, the UUCSA issued warning about baseless speculations through which false information spreads and causes escalating tensions.

Speculation over LGBTQ views and motive

Hendricks, a prominent LGBTQ advocate, was the founder of The Inner Circle, South Africa’s first queer-inclusive mosque.

His views on same-sex relationships in Islam often sparked debate and controversy.

While the MJC acknowledged its theological disagreements with Hendricks, it unequivocally condemned his murder, stating:

“While the MJC has consistently maintained that Muhsin’s position is incompatible with Islamic teachings, we strongly denounce any acts of violence against him or any other members of the LGBTQ community.”

According to IOL, the UUCSA reiterated its stance against extrajudicial killings, emphasizing that they undermine the rule of law and contribute to societal instability.

Tributes from faith and LGBTQ communities

South Africa’s LGBTQ community and religious followers reacted with outrage to the tragic death of Hendricks.

The Inclusive and Affirming Ministries (IAM) displayed profound grief about his death, while supporting LGBTQ individuals in religious communities.

“Even in death, we celebrate Imam Muhsin for his tireless efforts in building inclusive and affirming faith communities. He was deeply committed to this mission until his last breath,” IAM said in a statement.

The organization expressed sympathy to his family, colleagues and followers as well as, stating:

“His legacy of courage, inclusion, and faith will live on.”

The authorities sustain their investigation to identify the perpetrators behind the attack but without making any arrests.

The police force requests help from individuals who possess information about the case to help capture the responsible parties.
