“Consider Installing Outdoor Detection Devices”: Fidelity ADT Exec Warns Homeowners About ‘Fishing Method’ Theft

Criminals in Nelspruit have adopted a new tactic called the “fishing method” to steal valuables from homes. They use poles or rods to hook items like phones and laptops through open windows.

Rising Incidents Raise Security Concerns
Private security company Fidelity ADT has warned homeowners about this growing crime trend. The method allows thieves to grab items without entering the house. With summer temperatures rising, many residents leave windows open for ventilation, unknowingly making their homes easy targets.

Consequently, in the past two weeks, criminals have successfully stolen valuables in at least three reported cases.  Security experts fear that this technique could spread across South Africa, posing a major threat to homeowners.

How Criminals Execute the ‘Fishing Method’
Charnel Hattingh, Group Head of Marketing and Communications at Fidelity ADT, explained how criminals operate. They extend poles through open windows and hook valuables left on desks, tables, or countertops.

“These criminals never even step inside the house, making it difficult for residents to detect the theft immediately,” Hattingh said.

Crime Statistics Show Persistent Threats
Despite efforts to curb crime, burglaries remain high in South Africa. Between July and September 2024, police recorded 34,631 home burglaries—an average of 385 per day.

Additionally, house robberies, which involve direct confrontation, totaled 5,967 cases, averaging 66 incidents daily.

More importantly, while burglaries usually occur when no one is home, house robberies, on the other hand, involve threats or violence, putting residents at even greater risk.

On this note, Security experts advise homeowners to adopt proactive safety measures. Installing perimeter security systems and outdoor detection devices can help deter criminals.
