KIMBERLEY, NORTHERN CAPE – The Carnarvon Regional Court sentenced 19-year-old Byrone Maritz to 16 years in prison for the murder of Henry Williams and the assault of his girlfriend. The sentencing followed a violent altercation that turned deadly in July 2024.
Deadly Argument Leads to Murder
According to police, Maritz had been drinking with Williams, 40, and his girlfriend in Carnarvon on July 27, 2024. An argument erupted, escalating into violence. During the altercation, Maritz fatally stabbed Williams and then attacked his girlfriend, leaving her injured.
Law enforcement responded swiftly, arresting Maritz shortly after the incident. Authorities charged him with murder and assault with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm.
Conviction and Sentencing
According to IOL, the Carnarvon Regional Court found Maritz guilty of both charges on February 18, 2025. The judge sentenced him to 16 years for murder, holding him accountable for his actions.
The court also considered the trauma suffered by Williams’ girlfriend, who survived the assault but endured severe injuries. Prosecutors argued that Maritz’s violent outburst warranted a harsh penalty.
