Man Stabbed to Death While Calling E-Hailing Ride for Wife in Labor

Milnerton, Western Cape – A man was stabbed to death while calling an e-hailing service for his wife, who had gone into labor. Talent Gono, 34, suffered multiple stab wounds in front of his home in Joe Slovo on Thursday morning. His wife, Lillian Hlahla, gave birth next to his dying body.

Brutal Attack Before Childbirth

Hlahla went into labor around 4 a.m. Her husband rushed outside to place their bags in the vehicle. A group of attackers ambushed him in the darkness, stabbing him in the head, stomach, and chest. Hearing the struggle, Hlahla ran outside and found Gono lying in a pool of blood, whispering for water.

While she searched for help, the pain of labor intensified. She collapsed near her husband and delivered their child on the pavement. The baby’s first cry echoed through the night as Gono took his last breath.

Employer Calls for Community Support

Hlahla’s employer, Jeannie Ross, expressed shock over the tragedy. She recalled urging Hlahla to take time off when labor pains began. “Lillian and Talent were happily married. She was excited about their baby’s arrival,” Ross said.

Now, Ross is raising funds to support the grieving mother and her three children. Donations can be made at BackaBuddy.

Police Investigate Murder

Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Joseph Swartbooi confirmed the murder investigation. Milnerton detectives arrived at a clinic in Du Noon around 6:05 a.m. and found Gono’s lifeless body. Medical personnel declared him dead at the scene.

Authorities believe robbery was the motive. The suspects remain at large. “Anyone with information should call Crime Stop at 08600 10111,” Swartbooi said.

Tragedy Sparks Concern Over Safety

Gono’s murder highlights ongoing concerns about violent crime in South Africa. The e-hailing industry has faced several attacks, putting both drivers and passengers at risk. Residents now demand stronger safety measures to protect families like the Gonos from similar tragedies.
