Police Operation Ends in Deadly Gun Battle
Police shot and killed two of Limpopo’s most wanted suspects during a shootout near the R555 regional road in Ga-Mampuru. Acting on intelligence, officers tracked the fugitives to a hiding spot in the bushes. According to IOL, the deadly confrontation unfolded on Tuesday, marking a major breakthrough in ongoing efforts to combat violent crime.
Provincial police spokesperson Brigadier Hlulani Mashaba said law enforcement teams, including the Provincial Tracking Team and Tactical Response Unit, closed in on the suspects. Officers from multiple divisions joined the operation to ensure a swift and coordinated response.
“When confronted, the suspects opened fire on police. Officers retaliated, fatally wounding one suspect, who was armed with a pistol and ammunition. Authorities estimate his age to be between 30 and 35,” Mashaba said.
Police Chase Leads to Second Fatal Shooting
As officers secured the scene of the shootout, the second suspect attempted to escape but was quickly pursued. However, when he fired at police, officers returned fire, killing him on the spot. Investigators later identified him as a fugitive who had escaped from the Lebowakgomo Magistrate’s Court on March 17, 2023.
“The suspect was found in possession of an R5 rifle, a 9mm pistol, live ammunition, and 12 stolen cellphones,” Mashaba added.
Authorities linked both men to a string of violent crimes across Limpopo, including the murder of a Highway Patrol sergeant. Police revealed that during that attack, the suspects stole three rifles.
Criminal History and Links to Multiple Cases
Together, the fugitives faced more than ten serious charges, including murder, rape, house robbery, and kidnapping. Their crimes spanned several areas, including Lebowakgomo, Magatle, Sekhukhune, and Mankweng.
Law enforcement officials hailed the operation as a crucial victory in the fight against organized crime. Police urged community members to continue reporting criminal activities, emphasizing that intelligence-driven operations remain key to dismantling crime syndicates in Limpopo.
