A 48-year-old Nigerian man, Anthony Chikezie Mbonu, was fatally shot by unidentified assailants in Durban, South Africa, on February 23, 2025.
The Nigerian Union South Africa (NUSA) confirmed and condemned the tragic incident, describing Mbonu’s death as untimely and devastating.
Persecondnews reports that Mbonu, a respected member of the Nigerian community, was attacked by two gunmen, and his body has been deposited at a mortuary in Durban for further examination.
NUSA’s National Publicity Secretary, Akindele Olunloyo, stated that the case has been reported to the South African Police Service (SAPS), and an investigation is underway.
The Nigerian Consulate and High Commission have also been notified to ensure appropriate action is taken. “The motive behind this heinous act remains unknown,” said NUSA President Smart Nwobi, urging authorities to leave no stone unturned in their pursuit of justice.

In the wake of Mbonu’s murder, NUSA has called on Nigerians in South Africa to remain vigilant and cautious. “You should remain vigilant and aware of your surroundings at all times, report any suspicious activities to the local authorities immediately, and remain law-abiding while supporting one another during this difficult time,” Nwobi advised. The union also extended its condolences to Mbonu’s family, friends, and loved ones, describing his death as a significant loss to the Nigerian community.
Mbonu is survived by his daughter and his spouse, Madisa Duma, who is expecting their second child in April. His untimely death has left the Nigerian community in South Africa in mourning, with many calling for an end to the recurring violence against Nigerians in the country.
This incident adds to a growing list of attacks on Nigerians in South Africa, raising concerns about the safety of foreign nationals in the country.
