JOHANNESBURG — The African National Congress (ANC) parliamentary caucus has praised Gauteng’s Organised Crime Unit for uncovering a drug laboratory worth R10 million in Westonaria. The operation led to the arrest of two suspects.
The ANC study group on police emphasized the importance of shutting down drug labs and arresting key figures in the illegal trade. They believe this effort will help reduce drug-related crimes in Gauteng and across South Africa.
“Government policies alone cannot eliminate drug-related crime,” the ANC caucus stated. “This issue remains a major challenge in South Africa, affecting many communities.”
The group urged citizens to support law enforcement by reporting drug-related activities. “The high crime rate threatens the future of our children. We all share the responsibility of protecting our communities,” the caucus added.
Two suspects arrested in Westonaria drug bust
The South African Police Service (SAPS) announced Thursday that officers discovered the drug lab on the outskirts of Westonaria. They arrested two suspects, aged 51 and 49, in connection with the operation.
National Crime Intelligence officers had monitored the property for some time. They observed suspicious activity before obtaining a search and seizure warrant.
Once inside, police found mandrax and drug-manufacturing equipment.
Homeowner arrested in drug bust
One suspect, the alleged homeowner, was inside the lab when officers arrived. Police arrested him immediately. A follow-up investigation led to the second suspect’s arrest. Both now face charges of manufacturing and dealing in drugs.
