A court has sentenced a Petrusville man to 20 years in prison for raping a 76-year-old woman. Police call this a significant step in protecting vulnerable individuals.
A court has sentenced a Petrusville man, Daniel Williams, to 20 years in prison for raping a 76-year-old woman in her home. Authorities have praised the conviction as a crucial victory for elderly protection.
Court delivers justice
The Philipstown Magistrate’s Court announced the sentence on Friday, March 7. The crime happened on Dec. 3, 2023, when Williams visited the victim and her husband.
After the husband left to buy something from a nearby shop, Williams attacked the elderly woman and fled.
Immediate police response led to conviction
As soon as her husband returned, he found her in distress and wasted no time in reporting the incident to the police.
Officers arrested Williams just two days later. During the court proceedings, prosecutors successfully opposed his bail request. Eventually, the Philipstown Regional Court convicted him and ordered his name to be added to the National Register for Sexual Offenders.
Police commend detective for securing conviction
Northern Cape Police Commissioner Lt. Gen. Koliswa Otola applauded Detective Sgt. Willy Isaacs from the De Aar Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offenses Unit for his dedication to the case.
“We will continue intensifying our efforts to ensure justice prevails,” said police spokesperson Lt. Col. Sergio Kock.
