A joint law enforcement operation in Vanderbijlpark, Gauteng, has dismantled a large-scale drug lab, leading to the arrest of a 46-year-old suspect and the seizure of over R1 million ($54,000) worth of drugs and equipment.
Officers Track Down Wanted Suspect
Police launched the operation after investigating a drug dealing case in De Rust, Western Cape. Acting on intelligence, a multi-agency team—including the Western Cape Organised Crime Investigations (OCI), Gauteng Narcotics, West Rand K9 Unit, and Crime Intelligence—traced the suspect to South Crest, Alberton.
During the raid, officers searched the suspect’s home and vehicle. They found an unlicensed firearm and more than 7,000 mandrax tablets worth R560,000 ($30,000).
Drug Lab Discovered in Vanderbijlpark
Following new leads, officers moved to Vanderbijlpark, where they uncovered a fully operational drug lab. Inside, police found a tablet press, large amounts of mandrax powder, ready-made mandrax tablets, and various chemicals. The total estimated drug value was R500,000 ($27,000).
Suspect Faces Serious Charges
The suspect is set to appear in court next week. He faces multiple charges, including possession of drugs, drug dealing, and illegal drug manufacturing.
Police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Amanda van Wyk praised the operation, stating that law enforcement remains committed to dismantling criminal drug networks.
