ATM fraud suspects arrested in connection with a series of ATM frauds in the Western Cape, involving an estimated R7 million in losses.

Key Points:

  • Two suspects arrested for R7 million ATM fraud in Western Cape.
  • Fraudsters used specialized software to withdraw cash from ATMs.
  • Authorities recovered key evidence, including fraudulent ATM-access software.

Two suspects arrested for allegedly withdrawing R7 million through ATM fraud in Western Cape. Key evidence found during a vehicle search.

The arrests followed a multi-disciplinary, intelligence-driven operation led by the East London Serious Organised Crime Investigation team. Lieutenant Colonel Avele Fumba, spokesperson for Eastern Cape police, confirmed that the suspects were intercepted near Peddie on Monday.

Specialized Software used to Withdraw Money

According to Fumba, the suspects allegedly used specialized software to withdraw money from ATMs serviced by Fidelity Cash Solutions. One of the suspects reportedly posed as a Fidelity security guard, armed with a rifle, to create the illusion of legitimate ATM servicing.

The Western Cape police commercial crimes unit, suspecting that the criminals had relocated to the province, activated the Hawks in the Eastern Cape. Their efforts quickly led to new information, revealing that the suspects were staying at a guest house in East London. However, by the time authorities arrived, the suspects had already left, traveling in a white Toyota Fortuner toward Peddie. Police intercepted the vehicle on the N2 highway, resulting in their arrest.

During the vehicle search, authorities discovered a laptop containing fraudulent ATM-access software and other key evidence.

The suspects will appear in East London Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday. Afterwards, they will be transferred to the Western Cape to face charges.

Meanwhile, Major General Mboiki Obed Ngwenya, head of the Hawks in Eastern Cape, reaffirmed the unit’s dedication to dismantling criminal syndicates. Also ensuring that those responsible for economic crimes face justice.
