Free State Man Sentenced to Life for Murdering Sister

KEY POINTS

  • Mofihli Pickson Rapabi sentenced to life imprisonment for sister’s murder.
  • Attempted murder of stepmother leads to 15-year sentence.
  • Mofihli’s defense rejected by the court; execution-style murder confirmed.

A 57-year-old man has been sentenced to life imprisonment for the brutal murder of his sister, and an additional 15 years for attempting to murder his stepmother.

The incident occurred in Qwaqwa, Free State, when Mofihli Pickson Rapabi visited his 81-year-old stepmother, Nozizathu Rapabi, at her home in Poeleng village.

The confrontation unfolded when Sophie Buthelezi, 46, a relative visiting at the time, accused Mofihli of abusing their mother.

This Free State murder sparked a violent outburst from Mofihli, who shot Sophie in the forehead and side of her head before shooting his stepmother in the neck.

He then executed Sophie with a third shot to the mouth, before leaving. Despite her grave injuries, Nozizathu managed to crawl to the gate to seek help.

The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokesperson, Mojalefa Senokoatsane, explained that Mofihli claimed his actions were in self-defense.

He argued that Sophie had threatened him with boiling water and that the shooting of his stepmother was accidental, occurring during a struggle for the firearm.

However, the court rejected this defense and found that Mofihli acted with intent to kill.

Defendant’s defense rejected as execution-style murder confirmed

During the trial, Mofihli admitted under cross-examination that Sophie was unarmed when he shot her. He failed to provide a legal justification for his actions.

According to IOL, his defense was deemed inadequate. The court concluded that his actions amounted to execution-style murder, rather than a case of self-defense.

Senokoatsane noted that the evidence supported the argument that Mofihli acted with intent.

This was especially true given the context of the altercation, where accusations of abuse were made.

This case brings attention to the persistent domestic violence problem in society. It also shows the severe consequences it can have on families.

Court’s decision highlights severe impact of domestic violence

The sentence reflects the severity of domestic violence in South Africa, where the effects are far-reaching and often result in tragic outcomes.

Mofihli’s crime stands as a stark reminder of the dangerous potential for violence when family disputes escalate.

This Free State murder case also emphasizes the importance of addressing domestic abuse and fostering healthy communication within households to prevent such tragedies.
