Zanzou Nightclub Bouncer Seeks Bail Amid Assault Charges

KEY POINTS

  • Bouncer seeks bail citing financial strain, while prosecutors argue his immigration status makes him a flight risk.
  • Case delayed for identity parades after an eighth victim emerged, with a bail decision expected April 3.
  • Incidents exposed via viral videos show alleged torture, intensifying scrutiny of nightclub security practices.

A Congolese bouncer linked to multiple assaults at Pretoria’s Zanzou nightclub appeared in court Friday, pleading for bail while citing family hardship.

The 41-year-old faces eight counts of compelled sexual assault and six counts of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

“I am the sole provider for my wife and three children,” the accused stated in his affidavit, revealing he earns R15,000 monthly as a bouncer. “My family faces eviction without my income.” The man—whose identity remains protected pending an identification parade—denies all charges.

Prosecutors opposed bail, noting his lack of passport and temporary asylum status. “He’s a flight risk who already expressed fear for his safety,” said NPA spokesperson Lumka Mahanjana. The case was postponed to April 3 for further arguments.

Graphic videos from Zanzou spark national outrage

TheCitizen reports that the charges stem from incidents in 2022–2023, where victims were allegedly tortured and forced into sexual acts. Viral videos of the assaults triggered public fury, leading to the nightclub’s license suspension and a manhunt for eight suspects.

The accused also alleges police brutality during his February arrest in Yeoville, claiming officers robbed him. Meanwhile, activists have condemned the delayed justice, with one victim only coming forward this week.
