Rapists Convicted in Limpopo for Separate Crimes
In a firm response to gender-based violence, the Modimolle Regional Court in Limpopo has convicted two men for the rape of young women in separate incidents in 2022 and 2023.
The convictions represent a significant step toward justice for the victims and a victory for the South African Police Service (SAPS) in its ongoing battle against sexual violence.
First Rapist Sentenced to Eight Years for Raping Minor
The first case involved a 29-year-old man, whose identity is protected due to his relationship to the victim. He was convicted of raping a minor on two occasions. According to provincial police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Stephen Thakeng, the assaults occurred on May 4, 2022, and February 21, 2023.
The perpetrator entered the victim’s room while she was at home, shut the door, and raped her. Afterward, he attempted to silence the victim by giving her R50. He continued visiting her home under the guise of family interaction, allegedly indicating his intention to repeat the crime. The victim later reported the incidents to her mother, prompting the authorities to intervene.
“After a thorough investigation, it was confirmed that she was raped,” said Thakeng.
The suspect was arrested and held in custody until his conviction on March 26, 2025. He received an eight-year prison sentence.
Second Rapist Sentenced to 10 Years for Assaulting Woman
In the second case, 24-year-old Abel Thato Magobja was convicted of raping a 20-year-old woman on the night of March 19, 2022. Thakeng explained that the victim was outside a tavern when the accused approached her, grabbed her, and dragged her to his home. There, she was assaulted and raped. The victim managed to escape through a window while Magobja was asleep.
The case was reported to the Bela-Bela police and transferred to the Family Violence, Child Protection, and Sexual Offenses Unit. Warrant Officer Rachoene Edward led the investigation, ensuring that a strong case was presented against the accused.
Magobja was sentenced to 10 years in prison on March 27, 2025.
Provincial police commissioner Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe praised the officers’ dedication, highlighting their role in securing justice for the victims and promoting safety within the community.
