The Pretoria High Court has handed down two life sentences to 37-year-old Hugo Ferreira for the brutal rape and murder of his eight-day-old daughter, Caithlyn, in a case that has shocked South Africa.
The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) welcomed the judgment, calling it a stern warning to perpetrators of gender-based violence (GBV).
Ferreira, from Carletonville, committed the horrific crime in June 2023 while the infant’s mother was away selling clothes to buy nappies.
Before she left, Ferreira allegedly warned her to return within five minutes, as the baby was breastfeeding. When she failed to return on time, he subjected the newborn to unspeakable violence.
“When she failed to return on time and the baby began crying, Ferreira, enraged, assaulted and raped the newborn. He used his fingers to violate her and rubbed his private parts against hers, later claiming he was ‘giving the baby a reason to cry’,” said NPA spokesperson Lumka Mahanjana.
According to Sowetanlive, the mother discovered the injuries upon her return and rushed the infant to the hospital, where she died the following day. Ferreira was arrested immediately and later pleaded guilty to both rape and murder, though he sought leniency, arguing that his guilty plea demonstrated remorse.
Prosecutor rejects plea for leniency in the murder case
State advocate Andre Wilsenach vehemently opposed Ferreira’s request for a reduced sentence, arguing that the crimes were too heinous to justify mercy. “Ferreira’s acts were committed against his own defenseless child out of sheer spite towards the mother. No remorse can undo such evil,” Wilsenach stated.
The case has reignited national outrage over GBV and child abuse in South Africa, where femicide and sexual violence remain critical issues.
According to recent crime statistics, over 290 rape cases were reported at educational institutions in just nine months in 2024, highlighting a broader crisis.
The NPA reaffirmed its commitment to justice for victims of GBV, with Mahanjana stating, “This case reaffirms our unwavering commitment to combating gender-based violence and femicide, ensuring that perpetrators face the full weight of justice.”
