Four suspected robbers died in a shootout with the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD) after they robbed a liquor store in Alberton on Monday.

The Robbery and Pursuit
EMPD spokesperson Thabiso Makgato said the suspects raided the Dog Box Liquor Store on Kritzinger Avenue in Verwoerdpark before fleeing the scene. Community members who witnessed the robbery immediately contacted the EMPD officers who were patrolling the area.
The suspects, traveling in a silver Renault Triber, quickly fled toward the N3 north highway. They didn’t realize that the police were already tracking them. As the suspects entered the N12, the EMPD officers began a high-speed chase to apprehend them.
The Shootout and Fatalities
Whenthe police closed in, the suspects opened fire on them. The officers returned fire, leading to a fierce exchange. Tragically, the gunfight resulted in the deaths of all four suspects. Makgato confirmed that a fifth suspect sustained a leg injury. The police immediately transported the injured individual to Thelle Mokgoerane Hospital for medical treatment.
A Similar Incident in KwaZulu-Natal
Thisshootout follows a deadly incident in KwaZulu-Natal. On Wednesday, five suspected cash-in-transit robbers died in a shootout with police near Ridgeview, Chesterville. Provincial police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda said the suspects had been involved in a series of cash-in-transit robberies, including one on March 31, 2025, in KwaMashu.
Police conducted an intelligence-led operation and gathered information that the suspects were planning to commit another robbery in the iLembe District of northern KZN. When officers confronted the suspects, the police shot and killed all five on the scene. The police recovered four firearms during the operation.
