Amber Lee Hughes, 25, pleaded not guilty to two counts of rape and murder. She is accused of raping and murdering her former boyfriend’s four-year-old daughter, Nada-Jane Challita.
In January 2023, authorities in Glenvista, Johannesburg, discovered the young girl floating in a bathtub full of water.
Relationship with the father marked by altercations and jealousy
Hughes was in a romantic relationship with the girl’s father, Ellie Challita. They met when Challita enrolled his daughter at a preschool where Hughes worked, and they began dating in 2021. Afterward, Hughes moved in with Challita and his daughter.
The relationship was reportedly marked by frequent altercations. Hughes allegedly threatened to harm the child during disputes.
Allegations of murder and assault during a heated argument
Challita testified that Hughes was jealous of his daughter, especially when he showed her more attention.
Due to the volatile nature of their relationship, Challita filed a domestic complaint against Hughes. The couple separated for a few months but later reconciled. \
According to IOL, on the day of the incident, Challita was in Polokwane, Limpopo, viewing houses. The two argued via text messages, during which Hughes allegedly threatened to kill Challita’s daughter.
“The accused allegedly raped the deceased by inserting an unknown object into her private parts. She also allegedly drowned her and cut both her wrists. Her lifeless body was later found floating in the bathtub,” said Mjonondwane.
The trial will continue on Tuesday, April 15.
