The South African Police Service’s Anti-Gang Unit (AGU) arrested three male suspects in Johannesburg on April 14.
The police found the suspects, including a Tanzanian national, in possession of suspected Mandrax tablets. The arrests occurred during targeted operations across various locations in the city.
Details of the drug bust and arrests
According to IOL, Lieutenant Colonel Mavela Masondo, a police spokesperson, reported the first arrest on Komani Street in Riverlea.
A 40-year-old man was found with four and a half Mandrax tablets. Shortly after, authorities arrested another suspect on Caroline Street in Brixton, who had two and a quarter suspected Mandrax tablets.
The most significant bust took place in Fordsburg, where a 50-year-old Tanzanian national was arrested at Albertina Sisulu and Church streets. Authorities allegedly found him in possession of 29 quarters of Mandrax pills.
“All suspects are expected to appear in their respective courts soon,” Masondo said.
AGU commander praises arrests, urges public cooperation
Brigadier Maphoto, AGU Commander, praised the arrests, highlighting the unit’s ongoing commitment to fighting drug-related crime. “We will keep our boots on the ground and continue to make a significant impact. The community plays a crucial role in this fight; we urge everyone to report any suspicious activities,” he said.
Maphoto emphasised the importance of community involvement and encouraged the public to report suspicious activities. The AGU remains vigilant in ensuring communities are free from the effects of drugs and firearms.
