Two young teachers from Ennerdale Secondary School in Johannesburg, aged 26 and 28, were killed in a devastating car crash over the weekend.

The Gauteng Department of Education confirmed the tragic news on Wednesday, revealing that the educators had been reported missing before their deaths were linked to the accident.

“Their deaths have now been linked to a fatal motor vehicle accident on Saturday,” said Gauteng education department spokesperson Steve Mabona. “According to information, the accident occurred on Saturday morning on the R28 near the Lenasia turn-off in Jachtfontein.”

The collision involved two vehicles, one of which carried three occupants. The two teachers were among them and were declared dead at the scene. The third occupant sustained serious injuries and was rushed to a nearby hospital. Authorities have not yet released the identities of the victims pending notification of their families.

School and community in shock as tributes pour in

Ennerdale Secondary School has been plunged into grief as staff and students struggle to come to terms with the loss. The school’s principal described the teachers as “dedicated professionals who had a profound impact on their learners.”

Sowetanlive reports that local residents and fellow educators have taken to social media to express their sorrow, with many sharing memories of the two young teachers. A candlelight vigil is being planned by the school to honor their lives.

Meanwhile, police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash. Preliminary reports suggest that poor visibility or speeding may have been contributing factors, but officials have urged the public to await the final findings.

“The circumstances surrounding this incident are under investigation by police,” Mabona reiterated.

Road safety advocates have called for increased vigilance on the R28, a route known for frequent accidents. The Gauteng Department of Transport has pledged to reassess road conditions and signage in the area to prevent further tragedies.
