Authorities expect traffic to surge on South Africa’s major routes during the Easter weekend, with officials urging patience and caution.
The Mpumalanga Department of Community Safety, Security, and Liaison reported that the number of fatalities from a N4 head-on collision between Belfast and Machadodorp has risen to six.
The crash occurred Thursday afternoon when a bakkie and a sports utility vehicle (SUV) collided. Initially, reports indicated five deaths. However, one of the injured victims later died while receiving treatment at a hospital in Belfast.
Injuries and Emergency Response
At least three individuals sustained severe injuries in the crash. Emergency services quickly responded to the scene, providing medical attention and securing the area.
Department spokesperson Moeti Mmusi said that poor visibility, caused by heavy rain and wet road conditions, may have contributed to the N4 head-on collision. “We believe that inclement weather may have caused this accident because it is rainy and wet, and motorists can’t see well on the roads,” Mmusi said. He emphasized the importance of caution and urged drivers to follow road rules and adjust to the weather conditions.
Easter Travel and Road Safety Concerns
As South Africans hit the roads for the Easter weekend, traffic volumes are expected to surge on major routes, including the N4. Historically, the Easter period is one of the most dangerous times on the country’s roads. The high volume of cars, trucks, and buses traveling over short periods increases the risk of accidents. This year, authorities are particularly concerned about the added risks associated with inclement weather and the increased traffic.
Motorists should remain patient in high-risk traffic zones, especially during peak hours. The N4, a key route leading to Mpumalanga, is expected to experience heavy traffic. Law enforcement officials will closely monitor the situation.
Call for Caution
“We continue to appeal to motorists to adhere to the rules of the road and drive safely amid the unfavourable weather conditions,” Mmusi said. Authorities urge drivers to exercise patience and caution, particularly during this busy travel period.
