Police arrested a 39-year-old man in Bloemfontein after discovering hundreds of suspected stolen electronic devices at his flat. The police arrested the suspect during a joint operation involving the South African Police Service (SAPS), the Parkweg Firearm, Liquor, and Second-Hand Goods (FLASH) Unit, and the Parkweg Intervention Unit.

Operation targets suspected stolen goods

The arrest followed the capture of 12 suspects linked to recent robberies in the Bloemfontein central business district. The operation focused on both the individuals who committed the crimes and those suspected of purchasing stolen goods. Authorities praised the efforts of dedicated officers in the Parkweg area, working closely with the Bloemfontein community to maintain law and order. This initiative is part of the police’s larger strategy to combat crime in the region and ensure stolen goods do not enter the market.

Stolen electronics discovered at suspect’s flat

Police followed up on intelligence and proceeded to a residential building on Alexandra Road, where they confronted the 39-year-old foreign national. The suspect initially refused to let officers into his apartment. However, after officers persuaded him, the suspect granted them access. Once inside, the officers discovered approximately ten large bags filled with various electronics, including cellphones, tablets, and laptops.

554 stolen cellphones found with an estimated value of R2.5 million

Preliminary investigations show that police found 554 cellphone units, valued at an estimated R2.5 million. Investigators believe the suspect intended to transport these stolen devices out of Bloemfontein. The suspect, who also owns a cellphone shop, faces charges of possessing suspected stolen property. The Bloemfontein Magistrate’s Court will hear his case on April 22.

Police seek additional suspects and urge victims to report

Authorities urge robbery victims who have not reported their cases to come forward with proof of ownership to reclaim their stolen devices. The police are also searching for four foreign nationals believed to have connections to the arrested suspect. Investigations into the case continue as officers work to recover more stolen property and apprehend all individuals involved.
