Arrests of Drunk Drivers in Limpopo

Three drunk drivers have attempted to bribe traffic officers and were arrested in separate incidents across Limpopo.

Minister’s Update on Easter Road Safety Campaign
During a media briefing on the N1 in the Waterberg District on Monday, Transport Minister Barbara Creecy and Deputy Minister Mkhuleko Hlengwa updated the public on the Easter road safety campaign. Creecy focused on the rising number of drunken driving arrests, particularly after two additional drivers tried to bribe officers.

Increase in Drunken Driving Arrests

Earlier, the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) issued a press release on Sunday. It highlighted the increase in drunken driving arrests tied to bribery attempts. The RTMC reported that the National Traffic Police arrested motorists who tried to evade charges by offering cash to officers.

“This brings the number of motorists arrested for bribery in Limpopo to three,” the RTMC stated. “Another driver was arrested in Mokopane for the same offense.”

Details of the Arrests

The first arrest occurred on Good Friday morning. National Traffic Police officers stopped a driver on the N1 after they discovered he was intoxicated. The driver then attempted to bribe the officers with R300 to avoid being charged.

The RTMC praised the officers for their commitment to road safety and their refusal to accept bribes.

Minister Creecy’s Comments on Integrity and Law Enforcement

Creecy confirmed another driver’s arrest in Mokopane on Sunday. He attempted to bribe a national traffic officer after police caught him driving drunk. She added that the driver would soon appear in court to face charges of bribery, corruption, and drunk driving.

“I commend the officers who made these arrests,” Creecy said. “They showed professionalism, ethics, and integrity. Their actions help restore public confidence in our law enforcement authorities.”

Success of Road Safety Measures

Creecy also reported that despite heavy traffic on the N1, which peaked at 2,047 vehicles per hour on Thursday and Friday, no fatal crashes occurred. This result highlights the effectiveness of the law enforcement strategy.

Appreciation for Local Law Enforcement Efforts

Creecy thanked Limpopo Transport and Community Safety MEC Violet Mathye and her team for their dedicated efforts. They ensured safety on the N1 and other routes in Limpopo over the weekend.
