Police say the murder was gang-related revenge
Cape Town police have arrested two additional suspects in connection with the Wynberg court shooting that claimed a man’s life earlier this month. These arrests bring the number of individuals in custody for the case to four.
Western Cape police spokesperson Sergeant Wesley Twigg said officers apprehended the suspects, aged 23 and 34, during early morning operations on Thursday, April 24.
“This brings the number of suspects arrested for the murder to four,” Twigg said.
Gunmen executed attack inside courthouse
Gunmen stormed the Wynberg Magistrate’s Court on April 8 and shot a 50-year-old man multiple times. They struck him with three bullets to the head, killing him instantly at the scene.
Police confirmed that the newly arrested suspects face murder charges. Authorities will present them in the Wynberg Magistrate’s Court on Friday.
Gang ties and revenge motive uncovered
Earlier this month, officers arrested Shireen Mathews in connection with the same Wynberg court shooting. The Western Cape division of the National Prosecuting Authority said Mathews conspired with the Junky Funky Kids gang to execute the killing.
“The State believes that the murder was a retaliation for a murder that the deceased committed,” the NPA said.
Officials have pledged to oppose Mathews’ bail application. She is scheduled to return to court at the end of May.
Meanwhile, police have also charged 24-year-old Abubaker Adams with murder. Investigators believe the killing was part of a pattern of revenge within gang circles.
The brazen attack has reignited fears about courtroom security. It has also prompted renewed concern about the growing influence of gangs over South Africa’s criminal justice system.
