Western Cape police seized nearly R900,000 worth of dagga during two separate roadblock operations along the N1 in the Central Karoo.

Efforts to stop drug trafficking led the Central Karoo Flying Squad to conduct a checkpoint near Beaufort West on Saturday evening.

Police spokesperson Sergeant Christopher Spies said officers pulled over a Toyota RAV4 and detected a strong scent of dagga inside.

Suspects arrested after dagga discovered during routine checks

During the search, officers found nine bags of dagga hidden under a blanket, with an estimated street value of R823,000.

Authorities arrested the 45-year-old driver at the scene, taking him into custody for possession and suspected dealing in drugs.

In a separate roadblock operation on Thursday, police and law enforcement officers stopped a Toyota Hilux bakkie on the N1.

A search revealed a suitcase containing 16 parcels of dagga, valued at approximately R90,000, inside the vehicle’s luggage compartment.

Officers arrested a 41-year-old suspect immediately at the scene and detained him pending formal charges in Beaufort West.

Ongoing road safety operations lead to successful drug confiscations

According to IOL, both arrested suspects remain in custody and will appear in the Beaufort West Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, April 29, 2025.

Each suspect faces charges of dealing in drugs following the discovery of the large quantities of dagga during the operations.

Western Cape police management praised the swift efforts of law enforcement teams operating during the province’s crime-fighting initiatives.

Officials confirmed that these arrests and seizures form part of ongoing crime prevention and road safety efforts across the province.

Police said the intensified operations would continue throughout the long weekend and extend into broader crime prevention initiatives.
