Key Points

  • Judgment in the Joshlin Smith kidnapping case is expected Friday.

  • Public interest remains high in the high-profile child abduction.

  • The key witness helped shape the State’s case against the accused.

The Western Cape community is bracing for a major legal moment. Judge Nathan Erasmus will deliver his judgment in the highly publicized Joshlin Smith kidnapping trial on Friday.

Joshlin, only six years old, vanished from her home in Middelpos, Saldanha Bay, on February 19, 2024.

Her sudden disappearance immediately triggered a massive search operation. Within days, investigators expanded the search into a full-scale kidnapping and trafficking investigation.

Authorities arrested her mother, Racquel “Kelly” Smith, her boyfriend, Jacquen “Boeta” Appollis, and their friend, Steveno “Steffie” van Rhyn.

Each of them pleaded not guilty to the charges. Since March 3, the trial has taken place at the White City Multipurpose Centre in Diazville.

Now, after months of proceedings, the case finally nears resolution.

Public shows strong support as court prepares for crowd

Supporters from across the province plan to attend the verdict hearing. Some even expect to queue outside the venue as early as 4 a.m.

One of them, Chadwick Fortuin from Piketberg, said he joined the search from the start.

“I feel my presence must be there,” Fortuin explained. “We want to see justice prevail. I plan to stand outside from the early hours.”

Due to the expected crowd, Judge Erasmus emphasized the need for logistical planning. He confirmed that seating would prioritize only the families of the victim and the accused.

Even though politicians may attend the hearing, he clearly stated that they would not receive special seating.

As a result, court officials are preparing for a packed venue with heightened security and firm protocols.

Key witness shapes final moments of Joshlin Smith trial

Initially, the State charged five people. However, the court dropped charges against Phumza Sigaqa because of insufficient evidence.

Another suspect, Lourentia “Renz” Lombaard, decided to testify for the prosecution. Her statement became critical in shaping the State’s case.

Both the State and the defense completed their closing arguments on Wednesday. That milestone cleared the way for the judge’s final decision.

With public emotions running high, the outcome of the Joshlin Smith kidnapping trial may finally bring closure.

Not only does it offer hope to the Saldanha Bay community, but it also reminds the nation of the importance of justice in protecting its most vulnerable citizens.
