A dastardly house rob during the wee hours of Tuesday morning led to a crash and arrest after the alleged theft of a generator by a father and daughter duo at Gustrouw, Strand.
This headlong charge chase ensued until the white bakkie swerved and overturned at the intersection of Hassan Khan Avenue and Johaar Adams Street after hitting a security response vehicle. The suspects, aged 63 and 37, were apprehended at the scene.
Crash and arrest occur after generator theft
Niklaas Thysen, the Chairperson of the Strand Community Policing Forum (CPF) stated that the suspects tried to run away after having stolen a generator from a house in William Steward Street.
They evaded the armed chase after them and crashed at the intersection, said Thysen. We are still not sure if they are connected to other crimes, furthermore police will follow up with the situation.
The suspects were injured and were taken to a local hospital. Since then, they have been released and are to appear in Strand Magistrate’s Court upon charges being preferred against them.
Community confrontation and police response
Police spokesperson Anelisiwe Manyana also acknowledged that Strand police is conducting investigations for housebreaking, theft, and reckless and negligent driving.
Police discovered local security personnel under attack by an agitated crowd after they had arrested the suspects Manyana said. In response to that, officers forcefully moved the crowd aside and arrested the suspects. Finally recovery of the stolen generator took place at the scene.
