Investigation Into 3GAR’s McLaren Crash Draws Public Scrutiny

Key points

  • 3GAR McLaren crash investigation has yet to yield arrests.

  • Public pressure grows as CCTV shows clear speeding evidence.

  • Political figures call out SAPS for stalling the case.

The investigation into the high-speed crash involving Nigerian rapper 3GAR has yet to produce any arrests, despite clear footage of the incident.

On March 1, the rapper, whose real name is Prince Daniel Obioma, allegedly drove a McLaren 570S at nearly 200 kilometers per hour before slamming into a wall on Sea Point’s High Level Road.

Although the crash sent 3GAR to the hospital, police have not charged him or anyone else. The public remains outraged.

Many believe the CCTV footage showing reckless driving should have fast-tracked the case.

Police spokesperson Capt. FC van Wyk confirmed that a reckless driving case is under investigation.

However, he added that the case file was referred to the Director of Public Prosecutions for a decision. Since then, no timeline has been offered, and no progress has been publicly shared.

Public leaders question police delays in 3GAR McLaren crash

Many public officials have spoken out. Democratic Alliance representative Nicholas Gotsell said the delay sets a poor precedent.

“It’s been two months since a luxury car crashed due to reckless driving, yet no one has been charged,” he said. “There’s visible evidence, but no justice.”

Gotsell explained that he had written twice to Western Cape Police Commissioner Lt. Gen. Thembisile Patekile.

The replies he received offered no timeline and no assurance of progress. He compared the silence to other delayed traffic cases, including the February 1 Bree Street crash that killed a young dentist.

In both cases, delays have frustrated victims’ families and concerned citizens alike. Moreover, the lack of updates has fueled suspicions about whether high-profile individuals receive special treatment.

Calls for accountability and police transparency rise

The lack of consequences in the 3GAR McLaren crash case has prompted political and community leaders to demand action.

Gotsell said he will escalate the matter by writing to Ian Cameron, chairperson of Parliament’s Police Committee, urging SAPS to explain the lack of arrests.

Sea Point ward councillor Nicola Jowell also weighed in, saying that without enforcement, efforts to address noise and speeding in the area will continue to fail.

“This is not just about one crash,” she said. “It’s about ensuring our roads are safe, and reckless behavior has real consequences.”

Until SAPS makes meaningful progress, public confidence in road safety enforcement — and in the justice system — remains shaken.
