The case has reignited national concern about violence against media workers and calls for stronger journalist protection laws.
The South African government has extended its condolences following the presumed deaths of community radio journalist Aserie Ndlovu and his partner Zodwa Mdhluli, whose remains were likely discovered in Rust de Winter, Limpopo, after nearly three months of being missing.
Deputy Minister in the Presidency, Kenny Morolong, conveyed the message on behalf of the Presidency and the Government Communication and Information System (GCIS), lauding Ndlovu’s contributions to democratic media and condemning the brutal circumstances surrounding the couple’s disappearance.
“On behalf of the Presidency and the communications and information system of government, we condemn this senseless, barbaric and brute act of violence,” Morolong said. “Mr. Ndlovu served the public through his work in the media sector, contributing meaningfully to our democracy by informing and educating citizens.”
According to the South African Police Service (SAPS), the bodies believed to belong to Ndlovu and Mdhluli were uncovered on Thursday after one of five arrested suspects led investigators to a remote area.
The suspects, four adults and one minor, are currently in custody as forensic teams conduct DNA testing to confirm the identities of the deceased.
Tragic end to a high-profile missing persons case
The couple had been reported missing since February 18, 2025, triggering nationwide concern and advocacy from media organizations. The African Media and Communicators Forum (AMCF) and the National Press Club (NPC) had jointly increased a reward for information from R50,000 to R100,000, urging authorities to intensify efforts.
According to IOL, National Police Commissioner General Fannie Masemola confirmed during a media briefing that one suspect had cooperated with investigators by pointing out the general vicinity where the remains were located.
“One of the suspects did point out, not exactly there, but he did point out,” Masemola explained. “We then searched the area and we found the remains. We did not take ourselves there; they took us.”
The remains are now undergoing forensic and DNA testing, and SAPS has assured the public that confirmation will be shared once results are available. Police Minister Senzo Mchunu, who was present with Masemola at the time of the briefing, reiterated the government’s commitment to pursuing justice in the matter.
On Sunday, Deputy Minister Morolong visited the Ndlovu family to offer personal support and is expected to visit Capital Live FM, the Mamelodi-based community radio station Ndlovu founded. His visit, according to a GCIS statement, is part of broader efforts to recognize the impact of Ndlovu’s work and reaffirm support for journalists working under increasingly dangerous conditions.
“The loss of both Mr. Ndlovu and Ms. Mdhluli is a tragedy that highlights the need to continue strengthening efforts to combat violent crime,” Morolong stated. “As the Presidency and communications community, we extend our deepest condolences to the families, friends, and colleagues of the victims.”
The case has reignited discussions around the safety of journalists in South Africa, especially those working in grassroots and community media, where resources for protection and legal recourse are limited.
Legal and media advocacy groups have urged the government to expedite legislation and security protocols aimed at safeguarding journalists, particularly those investigating sensitive topics or working in rural and vulnerable areas.
The GCIS said it would continue to monitor the investigation and support initiatives to improve journalist safety, while civil society groups plan to hold vigils and public campaigns in memory of the slain couple.
