Security guards intercepted a CIT robbery near White River, Mpumalanga, on Thursday, killing one robber and sending another to the hospital.
According to Brig. Donald Mdhluli, one of the police representatives, robbers shot at a cash van, but security guards responding by firing at the suspects and injuring two of them.
One person died immediately after the incident, while police are guarding another suspect receiving treatment in a hospital.
According to Mdhluli, several unidentified suspects escaped during the gunfight.
Police have found a Ford Ranger abandoned alongside and recovered weapons
Police seized two rifles and discovered a Ford Ranger bakkie, possibly linked to the suspects, abandoned in Swalala near Masoyi. “The attempted robbery did not result in any theft of money,” Mdhluli confirmed.
The police expect the other suspect to appear in court soon to face charges. The investigation is still ongoing, and police are requesting that anyone with information shares it anonymously using Crime Stop (08600 10111) or the My SAPS app.

Maj. Gen. Zeph Mkhwanazi, filling in as the acting provincial police commissioner, commended the work of the security officers, especially how fast and good-naturedly they responded.
The steps we have taken to tackle violent crime are beginning to bear fruit, Mkhwanazi reported.
