Authorities have arrested three additional suspects in connection with the murder of a Johannesburg Metro Police Department, JMPD, officer, bringing the total number of individuals in custody to five.
According to Sowetanlive, the JMPD officer was gunned down during a robbery-related incident in Vlakfontein, south of Johannesburg, on May 14.
According to Gauteng Hawks spokesperson Colonel Katlego Mogale, the latest arrests were made on Saturday, May 17, during a multi-agency operation in Dobsonville, Soweto.
“The suspects, aged between 20 and 35, were found in possession of two firearms, one of which belonged to the slain officer. The second had its serial number filed off,” Mogale revealed.
Investigators also recovered a white VW Polo allegedly used by the suspects during the fatal encounter.
Multi-Agency crackdown traces suspects using vehicle linked to shooting
The deadly incident unfolded after JMPD officers responded to an attempted robbery complaint in Vlakfontein’s Winchester Street area. Upon spotting a vehicle matching the suspect description, officers approached with caution—but were met with gunfire. One officer was fatally shot.
“The attack shocked the law enforcement community. Officers were responding to protect the public and were ambushed,” said an official from the JMPD, speaking on condition of anonymity.
The suspects initially evaded capture, prompting a manhunt coordinated by the Hawks’ Serious Organised Crime Units in Vaal Rand and Pretoria, the National Priority Violent Crimes Unit, Gauteng Crime Intelligence, Ekurhuleni Metro Police, and other tactical teams.
Two suspects, aged 25 and 27, were the first to be apprehended on May 15 following leads generated from surveillance and community tip-offs. The three newly arrested suspects were located after intelligence linked them to the vehicle recovered at a Dobsonville residence.
“The cooperative effort among different police units reflects the seriousness with which the state treats attacks on law enforcement,” said Mogale.
All five suspects are set to appear in the Lenasia Magistrate’s Court on Monday. They face multiple charges, including murder, possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition, and defeating the ends of justice.
The killing of the JMPD officer has reignited public concern over escalating violence against police personnel and the dangerous conditions officers face while responding to crime scenes in volatile areas.
According to data from the South African Police Service, attacks on officers have risen by nearly 15% since 2023, with organized gangs and armed robbery syndicates often targeting them for their weapons and tactical gear.
Local officials and police unions have called for stronger legal protections and harsher penalties for those who attack law enforcement.
“We cannot allow a culture where police officers become targets without consequence,” said a representative from the Police and Prisons Civil Rights Union (POPCRU). “There must be zero tolerance for anyone who takes the life of someone who has sworn to protect others.”
