Police say Mongale was killed after going on a date
Mongale, 30, had reportedly gone on a date with the suspect on May 25. He picked her up from her Johannesburg residential complex in a white Volkswagen Polo.
Police later traced the car’s movements through Alexandra and Kew, before Mongale’s body was found dumped between Alexandra and Lombardy West.
Brig. Athlenda Mathe stated that the VW Polo used in the crime had counterfeit number plates. This detail helped investigators track the suspect’s movements leading up to the murder.
Olorato Mongale murder suspect’s parents also arrested
On Thursday night, law enforcement officials arrested the suspect’s parents. The father is the registered owner of the white VW Polo involved in the case.
The mother allegedly alerted the suspect that police were searching for him, which led to further obstruction of justice charges.
The case has sparked public outrage and renewed conversations around gender-based violence and accountability. Police say investigations are still ongoing, and more arrests may follow.
