Incident Overview

A woman was shot, and 200 sheep were stolen. This happened in a violent farm attack on Saturday night in the Eastern Cape. Police have opened cases of attempted murder and stock theft following the incident. It took place around 9 p.m. at a homestead in Lower Tyirha, Qumbu.

The Attack

Captain Welile Matyolo, spokesperson for the Eastern Cape police, reported that the thieves took off with around 200 sheep, which were later found hidden in a steep river valley near Bhelekence. According to Matyolo, the suspects fired shots through a window of the house as they fled the scene, hitting a female occupant in the thigh. The woman, who sustained a critical injury, was rushed to a nearby clinic before being transferred to a hospital for further treatment.

Search Operation and Recovery

Captain Dineo Koena, another police spokesperson, confirmed that officers received a report of the stock theft around 9 p.m. on Saturday and immediately began a search operation. Despite their efforts, the initial search yielded no results. However, by midday on Sunday, March 30, police received a tip-off and resumed their investigation. Acting on the lead, officers, with the help of local residents, located the stolen sheep hidden in a river valley near Bhelekence. A total of 145 live sheep and 24 dead sheep were recovered.

Investigation Ongoing

Although the livestock has been recovered, no arrests have been made. The investigation remains ongoing, and police are urging the public to come forward with any information that could help identify the suspects.
