Lusikisiki Massacre: Trial for Eight Charged Men Ongoing.

The court postponed the trial of eight men charged with the murder of 18 people in Lusikisiki to March 10, 2025. The Mthatha High Court will transfer the case to Lusikisiki to ensure swift handling.

Delay in Proceedings

The trial was originally set to start on Monday at the Lusikisiki Regional Court. However, the addition of an eighth suspect, Songezo Vuma, delayed proceedings. Vuma, aged 20, was apprehended on January 5 while traveling to Cape Town by bus. His first appearance took place on January 7. Investigations are still ongoing, as the prosecution needs additional time due to Vuma’s late inclusion.

Luxolo Tyali, spokesperson for the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), confirmed the delay. “The trial was initially scheduled to start today. However, the addition of Vuma required further investigation,” Tyali stated.

The Accused

Authorities charged Vuma as the latest person in connection with the tragic killings in Ngobozana village near Lusikisiki. The accused join seven others who are facing serious charges, including murder, possession of unlicensed firearms, and ammunition.

In addition to Vuma, the other accused are: Mzukisi Ndamase, 46; Siphosoxolo Myekethe, 45; Aphiwe “AP” Ndende, 25; Lwando Antony Abi, 33; Bonga Hintsa, 31; Zenande Paya, 38; and Mawethu Nomdlembu, 36. All eight men stand accused of involvement in the deaths of 18 people in a brutal shooting on September 28, 2024.

The Tragic Incident

The shooting occurred at two neighboring homesteads in Ngobozana village, which left 18 people dead. Following the attack, authorities arrested the suspects, leading to the formation of the case.

Trial Moves Forward

The acting Eastern Cape Judge President has assigned a judge to oversee the trial, ensuring a quick resolution. This case will now move to the Mthatha High Court, where the accused will face justice for their alleged crimes.

As investigations continue, South Africans await justice for the victims of the Lusikisiki massacre.
