Congolese National Granted Bail in Zanzou Club Torture Case

KEY POINTS

  • Congolese national granted R10k bail despite 13 assault charges linked to Zanzou Club attacks
  • Strict conditions imposed including police reporting, as five victims identify suspect
  • Case adjourned to May 5 amid growing scrutiny over Pretoria’s nightclub security

The Pretoria Magistrate’s Court has granted R10,000 bail to a Congolese man accused of multiple assaults at the controversial Zanzou club in Hatfield.

Magistrate Ernest Mbembele emphasized the decision was carefully considered, stating “while the alleged offenses are gruesome, the accused has demonstrated his entitlement to bail under current laws.” The accused, whose identity remains protected due to ongoing police investigations, faces 13 charges including assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and sexual assault at the Zanzou club.

“I will plead not guilty as I had nothing to do with these incidents,” the defendant told the court during his bail hearing. His defense highlighted valid asylum documentation, family responsibilities as sole breadwinner, and deep community ties since arriving in South Africa in 2011.

However, prosecutors revealed five victims had identified him in police lineups, with more complainants potentially coming forward.

Bail conditions imposed

The case stems from February incidents where viral videos showed patrons being brutally assaulted at the upscale venue. Magistrate Mbembele imposed strict bail conditions including thrice-weekly police reporting and travel restrictions within Pretoria. “If you genuinely feared for your safety, why seek bail?” the magistrate questioned, dismissing state arguments about flight risk.

Human rights groups have condemned the club’s alleged “torture dungeon” operations, with the South African Human Rights Commission monitoring the case. “This bail decision tests public confidence in our justice system’s handling of violent crimes,” said advocacy group spokesperson Thandiwe Nkosi.

Meanwhile, the Department of Home Affairs confirmed reviewing the accused’s asylum status amid immigration law concerns.

IOL reports that the matter returns to court May 5 for further investigation, as police complete identity parades with additional victims.

The nightclub remains closed following a municipal revocation of its liquor license, with civil suits from victims expected to follow criminal proceedings.
