A Gauteng police officer who was away from duty received arrest in Limpopo after he supposedly shot and fatally wounded a 24-year-old male outside a tavern after an argument while driving.
Local police authorities described the early morning shooting which happened around 2 a.m. on Monday through spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba.
The fatal shooting took place right in front of a tavern in Bakenberg Waterberg District. The responding policemen learned that medical professionals had already sent the victim to a nearby hospital during their investigation at the crime scene.
Authorities found the deceased victim already pronounced dead when they arrived at the scene.
Confrontation leads to fatal shooting
A more thorough investigation showed both the deceased man and the officer stationed at OR Tambo International Airport got into a physical dispute during their drive.
The dispute between both parties resulted in the officer taking alleged shots which struck the man in his right cheek. The police officer reportedly directed the hospitalized victim to medical care by driving him toward the hospital within his personal vehicle.
Gauteng cop arrested, investigation and charges
The motive behind the shooting remains under investigation. During their investigation police took possession of the entire firearm collection belonging to the police officer. Ipid received the matter to perform additional investigation procedures.
The person accused of murder awaits court proceedings at Tinmyne police station for murder charges after spending time there. Attendance in the Mahwelereng Magistrate’s Court is expected.
Acting provincial commissioner Major General Samuel Manala of Limpopo issued a command to investigate the case thoroughly.
