Commissioner Patrick Jaca detailed the harrowing events, stating, “The officers successfully located the vehicle and initiated a stop. While the driver initially failed to comply, the officers were able to bring the vehicle to a halt. As Officer Mokoena approached the driver’s side of the suspect vehicle — which contained five occupants — he was met with gunfire from within.”

In the ensuing chaos, Mokoena sought cover but was pursued by the suspects to a nearby residence where he was fatally shot. The perpetrators then fled the scene in the stolen patrol car, intensifying the manhunt.

Adding to the community’s grief, another resident was reportedly killed in the same area that night, with preliminary investigations suggesting a link to the same group of assailants.
