A manhunt is underway in Mpumalanga for a 44-year-old suspect who allegedly stabbed his elder brother to death following a family argument.
The fatal incident occurred on April 1, 2025, at Magogeni Mhlaba Royal Kraal, located near Malelane, at around 5:55 p.m.
Police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Jabu Ndubane confirmed the tragic event, stating that officers, along with the Emergency Medical Services, responded quickly to the scene.
Upon arrival, they found 65-year-old Mphondzo Mkhatshwa lying in a pool of blood, suffering from multiple stab wounds.
Family dispute leads to fatal violence at the Royal Kraal
According to preliminary investigations, a dispute between the siblings escalated into violence, with the suspect allegedly stabbing the victim. Following the altercation, the suspect fled the scene, leaving authorities to begin a search for him.
The police identified the suspect as 44-year-old Elvis Mkhatshwa, who is now a central figure in the ongoing investigation.
Authorities have made a public appeal for him to contact the police immediately, as he is considered an important part of the investigation into his brother’s death.
Police urge the public to report any information on suspect’s whereabouts
According to IOL, Schoemansdal Police Station has opened a murder case, and authorities are urging anyone with information about Elvis Mkhatshwa’s whereabouts to come forward. Lieutenant Colonel Ndubane emphasized that authorities will treat all information confidentially, and callers can remain anonymous if they choose.
Major General Zeph Mkhwanazi, Acting Provincial Commissioner of SAPS in Mpumalanga, expressed concern over the violent dispute.
“People should resolve disputes peacefully, not through violence,” Mkhwanazi said, urging the community to avoid violent confrontations.
The search for Mkhatshwa continues.
