Police have arrested a second suspect in the fatal shooting of taxi driver Ansley Agulhas in Gqeberha.

The 44-year-old victim was killed three weeks ago at a taxi rank near Brister House in Central. Agulhas was standing near his vehicle when two masked men approached him and opened fire.

Police said one suspect wore a black hoodie and fired several shots before fleeing with an accomplice. “The suspects ran down a side street toward Strand Street on foot,” said Capt. Sandra Janse van Rensburg.

Police initiated an investigation immediately after the incident occurred in the Eastern Cape city.

Detectives used recent intelligence to arrest a second individual linked to the shooting.

Firearm and ammunition recovered during the arrest operation

Accordign to Times Live, Janse van Rensburg said a team of detectives received actionable information on the second suspect’s location.

“With help from the national head office task team, we operationalised the information,” Janse van Rensburg said.

The team entered a house in Kenton-on-Sea and located the suspect hiding inside. Officers arrested the suspect and recovered a firearm with a live round of ammunition in his possession.

The suspect, age 42, faces charges of possessing an unlicensed firearm and unlicensed ammunition. Officers took the suspect into custody without resistance and secured the weapon at the scene.

Suspect expected to appear in court on murder charge

Janse van Rensburg confirmed the suspect would appear in two different courts in the coming days.

“The suspect will appear in the Kenton-on-Sea Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, April 22,” she said.

“He will then appear at the Gqeberha Magistrate’s Court on a murder charge during the week,” she added.

Shortly after the incident in Gqeberha, authorities arrested the first suspect in the case.

Investigators are gathering evidence and believe both men directly participated in the murder.

Police have not yet released the names of either suspect to the public. Authorities kindly request that anyone with additional information contact local law enforcement at their earliest convenience.
