The high-profile Senzo Meyiwa murder trial resumes today at the Pretoria court, with key developments expected as Advocate Charles Mnisi, the newly appointed legal representative for accused number 1, Muzi Sibiya, begins cross-examining the state’s final witness, lead investigator Bongani Gininda.

Mnisi, who also represents accused number 3, took over Sibiya’s defense last month following the passing of his previous lawyer, Thulani Mngomezulu, in December after a prolonged illness. Due to this transition, Mnisi had requested a two-week postponement to adequately prepare for his cross-examination of Gininda.

The trial, which has captivated national attention, has seen multiple delays and legal twists since its commencement. The defense’s cross-examination of Gininda is expected to be pivotal, as it could challenge the prosecution’s narrative and potentially alter the trajectory of the case.

Meyiwa, the former Orlando Pirates and Bafana Bafana goalkeeper, was fatally shot in 2014 at the Vosloorus home of his then-girlfriend, singer Kelly Khumalo. The trial has dragged on for years, with allegations of cover-ups, conspiracy theories, and conflicting testimonies complicating proceedings.

With the defense now fully prepared, today’s session is expected to be intense, as Mnisi attempts to dismantle the state’s case against his clients. The public continues to watch closely, hoping for long-awaited justice in one of South Africa’s most controversial murder cases.
