Police constable Bontle Kekana aged 31 from Naledi police station in Soweto received an arrest by the Hawks after they accused her of demanding bribes and extortion.
The police arrested Kekana on Wednesday when she attempted to receive R3000 from a person she had detained.
The Hawkes specialist anti-corruption wing under leadership of Lieutenant Colonel Lloyd Ramovha has augmented its operations to combat police force corruption.
On February 9th 2025 the complainant reported that Kekana and another person broke into his home claiming he had stolen a cellphone from a Naledi Shoprite employee. The detainee refused to go with the police but ended up at the store as witnesses identified him thus starting his detention at Jabulani police station.
During an interview Kekana proposed to dismiss the charges if the complainant bought a replacement for the stolen phone. The complaint required money instead of the stolen cellphone which the detainee paid R1,500 through withdrawing cash from his bank account.
Kekana believed that the initial payment amount did not satisfy her so she demanded an extra R3,000 from the detainee while making unlawful threats to keep him detained.
Hawks conduct sting operation
The West Rand-based Serious Corruption Investigation team received a report about this matter so they initiated a sting operation that arrested Kekana at Naledi police station.
she stood before the Protea Magistrate’s Court on Friday but received bail at R1,500. The court decided to delay the case investigation until April 7.
The Hawks organization continues its dedicated efforts against corruption activities.
The Hawks provincial head Major General Ebrahim Kadwa praised Kekana’s arrest by stressing that the organization shows no tolerance for police corruption.
