A tragic drive-by shooting in Durban claimed the life of a man in his twenties on Thursday evening, leaving the community in shock.

According to IOL, the incident occurred at the intersection of Che Guevara and Cleaver Roads in Davenport, where the victim’s vehicle crashed into a wall after being targeted by gunfire.

Emergency responders from ALS Paramedics arrived shortly after 6pm to find the scene secured by multiple security personnel. “Paramedics arrived on scene to find multiple security personnel in attendance with the area cornered off,” confirmed ALS Paramedics.

Upon approaching the crashed vehicle, medics discovered the victim with multiple gunshot wounds. Despite their efforts, they could not save him. “Paramedics assessed a male in the vehicle, a male in his twenties, who had sustained multiple gunshot wounds to his body. Unfortunately, there was nothing paramedics could do for him, and he was declared deceased on the scene,” the medical team reported.

Police launch investigation amid rising gun violence

The motive behind the shooting remains unclear, but the South African Police Service (SAPS) has taken over the case. “At this stage, the events leading up to the shooting are unknown, however SAPS were in attendance and will be investigating further,” ALS Paramedics stated.

This incident adds to growing concerns over gun violence in Durban, where fatal shootings have increased by 15% in the past year, according to recent crime statistics. Community leaders have called for heightened police visibility and stricter firearm regulations to curb such attacks.

Local resident Thando Mkhize expressed frustration: “We don’t feel safe anymore. These shootings happen too often, and no one is held accountable.” Authorities have urged anyone with information to come forward as investigations continue.
