Zanzou Club Suspect: Pretoria Court to Decide on Bail

KEY POINTS

  • The Pretoria court system will make a decision regarding bail rights for an individual accused of Zanzou torture acts.
  • A man’s risk for flight remains the State’s major legal reason to deny his release while the defense presents opposing evidence.

A Congolese defendant charged for the assaults and acts of torture at Zanzou night club in Pretoria will obtain bail verdict on Wednesday next week.

Legal arguments presented in court

On Thursday the unnamed suspect made a bail request before Pretoria Magistrate’s Court under a protective court order. According to the State attorneys he should not receive bail because they believed he would flee from justice.

Defense attorneys demonstrated through evidence that their client, Zanzou club suspect holds an asylum seeker permit which expires in July. Along with his bail application the defendant explained that he wanted his release because his family required his care.

Judgment postponed concerning Zanzou club suspect

The court extended its decision regarding the bail application until April 9 for additional judicial processes. The court decided to protect the 41-year-old individual’s identity through a parade process so their actual name cannot be released at this time.

The Hatfield club early February altercation led to his February arrest when he became involved with five friends alongside security staff and the facility manager. A storage area became the prison where victimized individuals received cruel physical mistreatment.
