Key Points

  • The Asset Forfeiture Unit seized over R647,000 (about $34,000) and a luxury car in a child pornography case.

  • Police arrested Darren Wilken and Tiona Moodley, and the court denied their bail.
  • The case shows how important international cooperation is in fighting cybercrime.

The Asset Forfeiture Unit (AFU) of South Africa’s National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) has taken firm action against child pornography.

They got a court order to take over R647,000 (about $34,000) in cash and a luxury car from Darren Wilken and his girlfriend, Tiona Megan Moodley.

This move followed a search by the Cybercrime Unit of the South African Police Service (SAPS) on January 17, 2025.

Police arrested Wilken and charged him with making and sharing child pornography, possessing drugs, and laundering money.

International cooperation in tackling cybercrime

Phindi Mjonondwane, NPA spokesperson for Gauteng, said the operation involved U.S. law enforcement agencies, including the FBI and Secret Service.

According to the investigation, Wilken ran a child pornography website from his home in Midrand.

He shared illegal content with people from different countries.

“He operated the business from his home, part of a complex. The website hosted what could be the largest collection of child pornography found in South Africa,” Mjonondwane said.

Police seized several valuable items during the search. These included a luxury vehicle with the registration “KIDZ NA GP,” expensive electronic equipment, and over R647,000 (about $34,000) in cash.

Authorities are holding these items to ensure they are not lost or used while the investigation continues.

Legal battles and ongoing investigation

Police also arrested Moodley, Wilken’s girlfriend, who faces similar charges. The couple appeared in the Randburg Regional Court and requested bail.

The court denied their request on February 14, 2025, after the state opposed the application.

“The investigation continues both in South Africa and other countries. Our goal is to protect children and ensure justice is served,” Mjonondwane said.

Confiscating their assets plays a key role in the process. If the court finds them guilty, these resources could help support victims and fund child protection programs.

This case shows how international cooperation is essential in fighting cybercrimes. Working with agencies like the FBI helps identify and arrest offenders.

Investigators are focused on gathering strong evidence to ensure justice. The NPA aims to hold offenders accountable and protect children’s rights.

As the case moves forward, there is hope that justice will prevail. Authorities also hope that this case will lead to better strategies for protecting children from future crimes.
