Soldiers Intervene in Alleged Car Theft at Thaba Tshwane
The South African National Defence Force has applauded its soldiers at Tek Base, Thaba Tshwane, for stopping a criminal act in progress on Sunday, May 4. Military and police forces worked together and foiled a car theft attempt, leading to the arrest of five suspects.
According to SANDF spokesperson Rear Adm. Prince Tshabalala, the suspects used the areas around the base to conceal their activities. However, military police and soldiers acted immediately on shared intelligence and disrupted the plan before the suspects could escape.
Troops Discover Two Suspicious Vehicles
Troops discovered a white Toyota Fortuner near the engineering formation. Authorities believe the vehicle was stolen.
Additionally, they found a white Kia with fake license discs. Soldiers and police immediately impounded both vehicles for forensic examination.
Police from SAPS Lyttelton arrested all five men, who are from Mamelodi. They remain in custody as the investigation continues.
SANDF Enforces Strict Military Zone Rules
Tshabalala praised the professionalism and quick thinking of the SANDF members. “They acted with discipline and bravery,” he said. “Their conduct reflects the SANDF’s core values.”
Furthermore, he warned civilians against attempting illegal actions near any military facility. “Anyone who commits a crime on or near a base will face the full weight of the law,” Tshabalala stated.
This car theft attempt foiled at Tek Base underscores the SANDF’s unwavering stance on military zone security.
National Crackdown on Vehicle Theft Continues
Last year, authorities conducted Operation Siyaqoqa, a large anti-crime effort. The operation focused on border areas between South Africa and Lesotho.
According to SAPS spokesperson Capt. Lorraine Earle, law enforcement recovered several stolen vehicles. They also arrested 72 suspects on various charges, including immigration violations, illegal firearms, and possession of stolen goods.
